Iowa State Fair's Free Stages Set to Thrill Audiences

  The 2012 Iowa State Fair free entertainment line-up is filled with rising stars and perennial favorites. The Fair's five free stages, all free with gate admission, will feature acts from a wide array of music genres. "Nothing Compares" to the Iowa State Fair, set August 9-19. Country music fans will find many great shows to tap their toes to, including Brett Elredge ("Raymond"), Steve Holy ("Brand New Girlfriend"), Hunter Hayes ("Storm Warning") and Will Hoge ("Even If It Breaks Your Heart").

Underage drinking has more consequences than just DUI

Drunk driving and underage drinking tragedies have led many parents to question how to handle their kid’s drinking and ensure that they stay safe. As a result, some parents have chosen to allow their kid to drink at home, “Where they will be safe.” Other adults may be doing the same to appear “cool” to kids and believe that teens drinking alcohol “is no big deal.

Dirt Action Rumbles into the Iowa State Fair

  "Nothing Compares" to the speed, action and adrenaline of track events at the Iowa State Fair. The Fair will host the thunder and roar of races, tractor and truck pulls and a demolition derby on the half-mile dirt track during the Fair's August 9-19 run. Kicking off track events at the Fair, the Deery Brothers Summer Series for Late Models speeds into the Grandstand on Monday, August 13.

College Savings Iowa Announces New Lower Fees for Participants

  State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announced today that the College Savings Iowa 529 Plan has reduced its fees by over 20%. "This marks the fourth time in five years that College Savings Iowa has been able to reduce its fees," said Treasurer Fitzgerald. "This means more money stays in the account where it belongs, making it a great value for Iowans saving for future college expenses.

IOWA, KANSAS, & NEBRASKA KICK OFF COACHES' CHALLENGE

  The National Mentoring Partnership has identified 15 million youth in need of a mentor.  Thousands of these youth live in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska.  In an effort to help close the gap, University of Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads, University of Northern Iowa Coach Mark Farley, University of Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini, Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder, and Kansas University Coach Charlie Weis have issued a friendly challenge to see which state can recruit the most new mentors.

Annual Parade to Kick-Off 2012 Iowa State Fair

  The 2012 Iowa State Fair Parade is set Wednesday, August 8. The Parade will begin at 6:15 p.m. in downtown Des Moines and is the annual kick-off to the Fair, which runs August 9-19. Former Iowa State Fair Board Member Don Greiman will lead as Parade Marshal. Greiman served on the Board for 44 years and was Fair board president two times prior to retiring in 2009.

40th ANNUAL HOPPER FAMILY REUNION

  The descendants of Jesse and Gertie Abernathey Hopper gathered for their 40th annual reunion on Sunday, July 29, 2012 in the fellowship room of the First Christian Church. The attendees and events at the first reunion held on August 26, 1973 were reviewed. The family members who had only missed 1 of the 40 reunions, Mona Hanson and Evelyn Covington, were honored as well as those family members who had attended more than half of the 40 reunions.

University of Dubuque Confers Degrees at May 2012 Commencement

Cardboard Boat Races: Winners honored for creativity, and sinking

Abigail and Jessica Warmenhoven On Saturday evening, the Vinton Community Swimming Pool hosted its 2nd annual Cardboard Boat Races. We had a lot of great entries into the competition and most of the boats managed to cross the finish line without sinking! Maple 7 Builds Skills with Habitat for Humanity

  By: Ashley Carmichael   For four weeks, Maple 7 is working with the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity in Des Moines, Iowa helping to prepare homes for families to move in to. The NCCC team is work on a number of different homes during their time in Des Moines, some of which will be new construction and some that will be rehab homes.
